The short answer
Toccatina in C minor, Op. 75 is a piece by Charles-Valentin Alkan from the Romantic era. PlayPiano puts it at Level 8, an estimate.
- toccatina
- Romantic
- stormy
History
The opus number can mislead here. Mark Viner reports that Richault first issued the Toccatina without one, around 1872, and that later issues added Op. 75. He cautions that this does not establish it as Alkan's last composition: publication order and opus order are not a reliable composing timeline.

What to listen for
A tiny pickup starts curving figures
Continuous upper shapes unfold above separated lower replies. Hear the flow without filling the lower gaps.
Smoother patterns bring a new colour
The changed signature accompanies repeated broken figures. Compare their smoother texture with the opening.
Fuller lower strands join renewed motion
The original signature returns as lower voices overlap and begin running. Hear their added movement beneath the wider upper line.
Opposing runs meet interrupted chords
Ascending and descending figures break into chords, holds and quieter exchanges. Hear the final response beyond the internal fermata.
How to practise it
Upper turn and descent; later low support at longer spacing.
- Sing the turning contour slowly and group each rise with its following fall before adding speed.
- Count the upper opening before adding the low entry, then maintain the longer low spacing without following every upper release.
How hard is it
Toccata-like motion requires even articulation, relaxed rapid coordination and clear phrase direction without allowing repeated gestures to become rigid.
