Who we are
PlayPiano is made and sold by PAL Innovation & Technology, Jaipur, India, which is responsible for the data described here. Contact: hello@getplaypiano.com. A postal address is available on request by email.
What the app collects and why
- Usage analytics. The app sends events, such as which screen or practice tool was used, to PostHog. We use them to see what works and what to fix. Events are tied to a random identifier for your device. If you sign in with Apple, they are also tied to a hash of your account id, never to your email, name or Apple identifier. A few facts about the app on your device go with them: the country of your App Store account (StoreKit’s storefront code), whether notifications are allowed, whether the device is a phone or an iPad, whether a MIDI keyboard has ever played into it, the part of the day your reminder is set for, the level and focus you chose, whether you have Maestro, the week you installed and the version you started on. PostHog’s software adds the operating system version, the device type and your language and region setting (locale).
- Crash reports. If the app fails, a crash report is sent to PostHog so we can fix it.
- Your account. Signing in with Apple is optional. If you do, we keep the email address Apple gives us, which may be a private relay address, to run your account and to contact you about it. We also keep Apple’s refresh token, only so we can revoke Sign in with Apple when you delete your account.
- Practice plans. To make a plan, the app sends a per-bar summary of the piece, such as note counts, hand spans and difficulty. It cannot be played back as music. Plans are kept on your account.
- Device check. The app proves to our server that it is a genuine copy of PlayPiano using Apple App Attest. This uses an identifier for your device key, not your name.
- Course and Music Room progress. Your course progress and your Music Room access records are stored on our server against your device, not against your account.
You can switch usage and crash reports off in Settings.
What the app never collects
- Your score files. They never leave your device.
- Recordings of you playing, or any other sound.
- Your name, your contacts or your device’s location.
- Anything you typed in a search, a file name or a piece title.
- An advertising identifier. PlayPiano does not track you across other apps and websites.
Marketing email
We send marketing email only if you opt in. The choice is off by default and you can change it at any time.
Where your data is processed
Analytics and crash reports are processed by PostHog in the United States, which is set to discard the IP address of the app’s events. Our server and website run on Cloudflare. Our server and Cloudflare process your IP address when the app or your browser connects to them, as any server must to answer: for the App Attest device check, the Music Room, practice plans and this website. We do not keep it with your account. To make a practice plan, the per-bar summary goes through Cloudflare AI Gateway to Anthropic, which writes the plan. Generated plans are also cached on our server by the music’s content hash, separate from any account, and hold no personal data. Subscriptions and payments are handled by Apple, and we do not see your payment details.
How long we keep it
PostHog keeps analytics events and crash reports for one year, then removes them. Account data is kept until you delete your account.
Deleting your data
In the app, open Settings and choose Delete my account. This removes your account, its email address, your linked devices and your saved plans from our server, and revokes Sign in with Apple for PlayPiano. It does not remove your course progress or your Music Room access records, because those are kept against your device, not your account. We delete them on request: email hello@getplaypiano.com. Deleting the app removes what it stored on your device.
This website
The website counts visits without cookies and stores nothing on your device. Page views are counted by Cloudflare Web Analytics; taps on the App Store key and the use of a tool or game are counted anonymously in PostHog. No account, name, email or anything you type is collected.
Children
PlayPiano is rated 4+ on the App Store and is suitable for children, but it is not in the App Store’s Kids category. A child can use the app without an account, and a parent can switch usage and crash reports off in Settings. Sign in with Apple needs an Apple Account, which a child under 13 gets only through a parent’s Family Sharing. If you think a child has given us an email address, write to hello@getplaypiano.com and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update this page and the date at the top.
