History
Invention No. 2 in C minor, BWV 773 belongs to Bach's two-part Inventions. The earlier teaching notebook for Wilhelm Friedemann was begun in Köthen on 22 January 1720. Bach made a separate fair copy of the collection in 1723, revising its presentation and order. These dates mark stages in the collection's history, not the exact day this individual piece was composed. The collection reached print in 1801, long after Bach's lifetime.

What to listen for
Leadership changes
Follow the canons’ exchanged leadership and the freer ending.
How to practise it
Keep the upper sixteenths even and prepare the delayed imitation.
- Practise the first upper sixteenth shapes slowly in their beamed groups.
- Count both silent bars before practising the lower entry.
How hard is it
Extended sixteenth-note movement alternates with held notes and ornamented figures. Keeping the two lines distinct through these changes calls for intermediate phrase and release control.
