History

Invention No. 15 in B minor, BWV 786 belongs to Bach's two-part Inventions. The earlier teaching notebook for Wilhelm Friedemann was begun in Köthen on 22 January 1720. Bach made a separate fair copy of the collection in 1723, revising its presentation and order. These dates mark stages in the collection's history, not the exact day this individual piece was composed. The collection reached print in 1801, long after Bach's lifetime.

What to listen for

  1. Sequences connect

Distinguish subject presentations from their shifting sequential links.

How to practise it

Let the upper ornaments speak over detached lower support.

  1. Practise the plain upper notes, then add the marked ornament gently.
  2. Practise the lower attacks with complete gaps before combining.

How hard is it

Level 6, estimated

Frequent ornaments and changing accidentals make the reading more involved than the two-part texture first suggests. The player needs dependable articulation and pulse through the changing patterns.
