History

Menuets I and II, Partita No. 1 in B-flat major, BWV 825 is a movement of Bach's first keyboard Partita. The partita first appeared in print in 1726 as the first work in a six-part series. Its historical keyboard context is the harpsichord, even though you can explore it on a piano today. The publication year belongs to the partita, rather than a separately dated composition story for this movement.

What to listen for

  1. The first dance pairs related phrases

The first minuet begins with related phrases before its opening repeat boundary. Hear their relationship without merging the following short source element into a new dance.

  2. A longer continuation completes the first dance

The first minuet develops a longer contrast before its later repeat boundary and short following element. Hear the larger phrase route within this first dance.

  3. The second dance develops its own contrast

The second minuet has its own contrasting continuation and final repeat. Compare that compact route with the longer first dance without inventing a return command.

How to practise it

Keep the upper eighths clear above the steadier lower route.

  1. Keep the upper pulse even.
  2. Listen to changing lower notes.
  3. Treat these anchors as Menuet I only.

How hard is it

Level 5, estimated

The acquired opening alternates upper eighth notes with lower quarter notes and changing registers. Phrase shape and independent bass placement matter; the second menuet remains outside this opening assessment.
