History
Praeludium, Partita No. 1 in B-flat major, BWV 825 is a movement of Bach's first keyboard Partita. The partita first appeared in print in 1726 as the first work in a six-part series. Its historical keyboard context is the harpsichord, even though you can explore it on a piano today. The publication year belongs to the partita, rather than a separately dated composition story for this movement.

What to listen for
Moving layers establish the opening
Several moving lines shape the opening and continuation. Listen for their separate direction rather than a single top melody with uniform support.
The continuation rises and grows denser
The continuation becomes higher and more active. Hear the changing balance of the layers as the texture expands.
Related contours change their pitch groups
Related shapes develop through changing pitch groupings. Follow the common contour while noticing the new harmonic colour.
The opening contour returns with motion beneath
The B-flat-related opening shape returns with additional lower motion before the final chord. Hear the familiar line within its fuller support.
How to practise it
Keep the decorated upper line distinct from the inner voice and bass.
- Practise each short figure slowly, then join it to the longer phrase.
- Practise voice 2 with the tied bass, then add the upper decoration softly.
- Connect the examined opening at a comfortable tempo only when its separate layers feel settled.
How hard is it
The opening combines ornamented sixteenth and thirty-second figures with an inner line and tied bass. Independent voicing and ornament timing are the observed challenges.
