Also known as Corrente: Partita No. 3 in A minor, BWV 827; J.S. Bach Partita No. 3 3. Courante.

History

Corrente, Partita No. 3 in A minor, BWV 827 is part of Bach's A-minor third keyboard Partita. The work appears in Anna Magdalena Bach's second notebook, begun in 1725, before its later publication as the third partita. A family music book and a printed edition preserve different stages in a work's life. The notebook year is evidence of that early setting, not proof that every movement was composed in 1725.

What to listen for

  1. Broken contours move into descent

The pickup starts broken shapes that become descending sequences. Hear their longer direction through the smaller notes.

  2. Changing registers lead to the first close

Register shifts carry the first span toward its repeat. Listen for the phrase across those changes.

  3. A climbing continuation becomes more active

The second span climbs through sequences and denser pitch changes. Hear its expansion before the final descent.

  4. Descending replies complete the second half

The last responses descend toward the final repeat. Compare their closing direction with the earlier climb.

How to practise it

Shape the dotted gestures, then prepare the changing lower activity.

  1. Practise the lower transition alone, then add the upper line at a softer study tempo.
  2. Connect the examined opening at a comfortable tempo only when its separate layers feel settled.

How hard is it

Level 7, estimated

Short upper gestures move between registers while lower rests give way to continuous sixteenth notes. Unequal articulation patterns and register movement require coordinated control.
