Fugue in E major, BWV 854 is a fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach from the Baroque era. PlayPiano puts it at Level 7, an estimate.

- playful

Also known as BWV 854 Fuga; Prelude and Fugue in E major, BWV 854; The Well-Tempered Clavier Book I No. 9.
History
The opening eighth note and quarter note leave space before the faster notes begin. Keep that contrast audible as the texture grows from one sounding line into several. A clear pulse lets the quick passages feel light rather than hurried.

How to practise it
- Keep the opening longer notes distinct from the following sixteenths; maintain each voice's own articulation.
- Use a slow pulse while fitting the compact sixteenth-note groups into it.
How hard is it
This 29-measure component moves from one sounding voice at its opening to three encoded voices by measure3, with 540 sixteenth note/rest elements across the edition. Balancing the lines while keeping the quick movement even makes this an advanced-intermediate proposal.
