History

The Netherlands Bach Society introduces this D-minor Prelude through Mattheson's historical description of the key as serious and sensitive, yet capable of flowing delight. It then hears that contrast in the Prelude's continuous crossing lines. The old key theory supplies cultural context, not a universal rule about how D minor must feel.

What to listen for

  1. A descending figure changes position

The upper descent begins over short low D attacks, then the lower voice takes that shape. Follow its direction across the exchange.

  2. Running descents and rises alternate

Linked descending and ascending figures answer broken eighth-note gestures in both parts. Hear their contrasting direction within the ongoing motion.

  3. The opening type returns at a changed pitch

A related descent returns around A before held upper sounds and more active lower motion. Recognise the shape in its new setting.

  4. Short exchanges lead to a broad final chord

Quick replies and rests gather over low supports before the full D-major fermata sonority. Hear the smaller motion settle into the broad arrival.

How to practise it

Descending line followed by a short rebound; low octave drop under quicker motion.

  1. Sing the descent as one gesture, then practise its rebound without turning the last three notes into a new heavy phrase.
  2. Prepare the low register shift separately and retain its longer pacing while adding the quicker line.

How hard is it

Level 8, estimated

Fast figuration and rhythmic grouping changes require secure subdivision and controlled coordination.
