Also known as Bach: Little Prelude in D minor BWV 935.

History

Little Prelude in D minor, BWV 935 is now grouped with the six little keyboard preludes BWV 933 to 938. The Netherlands Bach Society points out that these pieces were not preserved as a set in sources from Bach's time. Their familiar modern grouping is therefore not the same thing as an original bound collection left by the composer.

What to listen for

  1. Phrase lengths become less regular

Compare the first half’s regular groups with the less even later groupings proposed by Ooi.

How to practise it

Recognise the short-note figure when it moves from the upper to the lower line.

  1. Read the altered neighbour note carefully.
  2. Keep the short-note figures even.
  3. Let the lower entry retain its shape when the upper line becomes simpler.

How hard is it

Level 6, estimated

The first two measures expose a sixteenth-note figure alone; in measure 3 the lower staff takes it while the upper staff moves in eighth notes. Independent articulation and recognition of the transferred figure are the main observed demands.
