History
Brahms wrote the two Op. 79 rhapsodies in 1879, years before his late, more inward-looking piano miniatures. The first is in B minor: turbulent music that rewards listening for how an idea changes character as it returns. Brahms dedicated the pair to his friend and musical confidante Elisabeth von Herzogenberg.

What to listen for
A forceful beginning
Listen to the opening’s strong character before the later quieter contrast arrives.
The middle becomes quieter
The major-key middle changes the energy. Compare its quieter sound with the opening.
The opening force returns
Recognise the opening’s renewed character after the quieter middle passage.
Strength gives way to quiet
Listen through the returning force to the quieter close, rather than expecting a forceful ending.
How to practise it
Shape the dotted upper line without losing inner support.
- Practise the upper rhythm slowly on one pitch before restoring its notes.
- Practise inner and lower layers together before adding the upper dotted melody.
- Connect the examined phrase at a comfortable tempo while keeping its stated layers and releases distinct.
How hard is it
Powerful chordal textures, contrasting lyrical writing and extended development require advanced coordination and structural control.
