What to listen for

  1. A held song above small running groups

Tied upper notes form a song while lower groups move underneath. Hear the sustained line through the smaller detail.

  2. The running role changes layers

Upper quick notes now answer longer lower sounds and rise through the response. Follow the exchange instead of always hearing the top as the held melody.

  3. Detached pairs create a new contrast

Repeated upper pairs sound above changing lower chords in the second repeated section. Hear their shorter articulation as a change of texture.

  4. Different endings make different releases

The second repeated section has distinct continuing and final endings, with rests after the last figure. Hear whether the response continues or closes.

How to practise it

Keep the tied melody calm above a small broken-chord reply.

  1. Practise the first D sustain into its descending continuation.
  2. Practise the first lower burst at an even pace, then leave its written space.

How hard is it

Level 3, estimated

Douce Plainte is provisionally an expressive developing-student target, not graded by its short length or quiet character.
