History

Chopin’s B-flat-minor Nocturne, Op. 9 No. 1, was composed around 1830 to 31 and published in 1832 to 33. It is the first of a three-nocturne published group, not the first nocturne Chopin ever composed.

What to listen for

  1. A soft invitation

Six eighth notes lead into the first full bar. The source marks the pickup piano and expressive.

  2. The melody becomes freer

Longer melody notes give way to an eleven-note group, followed by a twenty-two-note flourish. Keep the musical line connected through the changing note density.

  3. An inner voice appears

A held upper note overlaps a moving inner line. Listen for the separate layers rather than treating the whole texture as one melody.

  4. The opening idea returns

The opening pickup-like figure returns inside a full bar, then leads into the familiar repeated notes. Notice that its written position is different this time.

  5. Keep the accompaniment flowing

The left hand unfolds broken chords in steady eighth notes beneath the freer melody. Practise its even motion separately, then keep it quiet when the hands join. Follow the source's pedal changes without blurring the harmony.

How to practise it

Keep an expressive melody distinct from the accompaniment pulse

  1. Hear the pickup before the accompaniment
  2. Fit the melodic group inside the supporting pulse

How hard is it

Level 7, estimated

The proposed upper-intermediate target prioritizes a connected melodic line, clear supporting motion and a coherent full nocturne, beyond recognizing the opening.
