History

The Paris Chopin Society places the twelve-study Op. 10 collection between 1829 to 1832 and records its first publication in 1833. A later Richault print, catalogued around 1860, names Franz Liszt as the set's dedicatee. The collection range does not give each study an independent completion year.

What to listen for

  1. Broad broken groups make a phrase

Broad broken-note groups receive related responses after the pickup. Hear each group within the longer line, not as an isolated chord attack.

  2. The opening returns in writing

The broad opening material is written again. Compare the familiar shape with its surrounding responses rather than adding a repeat instruction.

  3. A later return renews the shape

The opening returns again after changing chromatic groups. Listen for the renewed contour within its later position in the piece.

  4. The texture thins near the close

The final figures thin toward a register close. Hear the remaining movement and its release without repairing or relocating the source pitches.

How to practise it

Balance the chord tops while keeping repeated support relaxed.

  1. Practise the top-note contour alone, then add the shared chord tones softly.
  2. Practise the lower bass-to-chord move with lighter repeated chords.
  3. Connect the examined phrase at a comfortable tempo while keeping its stated layers and releases distinct.

How hard is it

Level 9, estimated

Arpeggiated chord textures require accurate spreading, controlled balance and endurance without rigid attacks.
