History

The Paris Chopin Society places the twelve-study Op. 10 collection between 1829 to 1832 and records its first publication in 1833. A later Richault print, catalogued around 1860, names Franz Liszt as the set's dedicatee. The collection range does not give each study an independent completion year.

What to listen for

  1. Lead into the first sweep

The upper opening note has a small ornamental figure before the first long descending sweep. Keep the ornament connected to the phrase rather than letting it delay or obscure the next main attack.

  2. Shape the descent and its answering rise

The fast line falls through several registers, then turns upward in the next bar. Hear the direction of each sweep while keeping the small notes evenly spaced.

  3. Keep the lower pulse distinct

The fast line continues while the lower voices use longer notes, short detached attacks and rests. Let those lower gestures retain their own rhythm instead of blending everything into one uninterrupted stream.

  4. Balance decoration with continuous motion

Small lower ornaments and separated chords sit beneath the sweeping line. Keep their attacks clear, but leave enough space for the moving line to remain audible throughout.

How to practise it

Keep the wide running contour even while preserving its supporting layers.

  1. Learn the contour before speed.
  2. Follow the moving voice across staves.
  3. Keep lower long notes independent.

How hard is it

Level 9, estimated

The advanced-to-concert target values clear, coordinated motion and dependable full-study performance. Speed without line direction and controlled support is not the intended target.
