History

The Paris Chopin Society places the twelve-study Op. 25 collection between 1832 to 1836 and records its first publication in 1837. A later Richault print, catalogued around 1860, names Marie de Flavigny d'Agoult as the set's dedicatee. The collection range does not give each study an independent completion year.

What to listen for

  1. Launch from the pickup

A single upper note leads into the first complete bar while the lower staff initially rests. Give that opening note direction into the phrase rather than treating it as an extra full bar.

  2. Keep the short-long gesture crisp

The upper part alternates short paired notes with longer single notes. Keep their unequal lengths clear, without smoothing the short notes into an even stream or rushing the longer ones.

  3. Hear the space in the accompaniment

Lower chords surround a written rest while the upper gesture continues. Let the gap remain audible; the accompaniment does not need to fill every moment of the melody.

  4. Carry the pattern into a higher register

The upper gesture rises into a brighter register without changing its short-long rhythm. Keep the same pulse and shape through the climb instead of accelerating as the notes rise.

How to practise it

Make the short-long upper rhythm clear above the supporting chords.

  1. Connect the pickup to the phrase.
  2. Distinguish short and dotted values.
  3. Keep supporting chord entries coordinated.

How hard is it

Level 9, estimated

The advanced-to-concert proposal values controlled changes of character and dependable coordination throughout the full study, not one opening pattern taken in isolation.
