History

PTNA's account places the beginnings of some Op. 28 preludes around 1836 and reports completion of the collection in Mallorca in 1838. The autograph collection was sent to Paris in January 1839, and publication followed in 1839. This is a history of the set, not evidence that every prelude began on the island.

What to listen for

  1. Paired notes climb through changing pitches

Repeated upper pairs rise chromatically over detached chordal support. Hear the larger ascent across the repeated rhythm.

  2. Held upper tones meet moving inner voices

Broader sounds contrast with the active inner layer. Keep the long notes audible while the smaller movement continues.

  3. The returning figure becomes more exposed

The later recall thins into separated pairings and lower descent beneath held upper sound. Hear the changing balance within the familiar gesture.

  4. Longer replies lead to a short cadence

Alternating responses grow longer before the final brief close. Compare their scale with the earlier paired-note climb.

How to practise it

Make the repeated chromatic upper steps clear above the detached octave punctuation.

  1. Name the pitches and play the repeated pairs slowly, checking F-sharp versus F-double-sharp before accelerating.
  2. Play the opening chord and following octaves in rhythm, contrasting the first accent with lighter detached replies.

How hard is it

Level 9, estimated

Persistent rapid gestures and rising tension require stamina, controlled accents and secure coordination.
