Also known as Frédéric Chopin: Nocturne in C minor Op. 48 No. 1.

History

Chopin wrote the C-minor Nocturne as the first of his two Op. 48 nocturnes. The pair appeared in Paris in 1841, and the first nocturne also survives in a copy prepared for his friend and copyist Julian Fontana. As you learn it, notice how a genre associated with intimate singing can expand into a much larger dramatic arc.

What to listen for

  1. A singing opening begins the route

Follow the opening song-like line before the middle changes the texture.

  2. Chorale and octaves make a contrast

Compare the middle’s chorale and octave writing with the opening singing texture.

  3. Stronger chords change the returning song

Hear the opening song return over more forceful accompanying chords, rather than expecting an unchanged copy.

How to practise it

Let the spacious upper line lead above short accompaniment.

  1. Practise the upper rests and entry, then connect the tie into the sixteenths.
  2. Practise the lower quarters lightly, with clear short releases.
  3. Connect the examined phrase at a comfortable tempo while keeping its stated layers and releases distinct.

How hard is it

Level 9, estimated

The restrained opening and powerful later chordal textures require a wide expressive range and advanced voicing.
