What to listen for

  1. An opening attack followed by motion

Octaves open the texture, then the lower voices move while the upper part leaves space. Keep the opening attack clear and listen to the lower motion rather than assuming the upper rests mean the phrase has stopped.

  2. Repeated lower figures carry the phrase

After a short upper chord, two lower lines repeat compact groups of notes. Keep the groups even and distinct while the upper staff rests for the entire next bar.

  3. Hear the staggered entries

Upper and lower chord sounds arrive at different points, with written rests between them. Keep their placement precise so the exchange retains its rhythm instead of becoming one continuous chordal sound.

  4. The pattern returns with changed notes

The short upper chord releases into another lower repeating figure. Hear the familiar motion in its new pitches and keep the pulse consistent across the return.

How to practise it

Keep the lower moving figures clear while preserving the upper spaces.

  1. Preserve the upper rests.
  2. Read the chromatic lower figures carefully.
  3. Keep lower layers together without making every attack heavy.

How hard is it

Level 9, estimated

The concert-oriented target values a clear dance foundation, differentiated presence and sustained coordination across the entire polonaise, not uniform force or volume.
