The short answer
Advertised as thirty studies. School of Velocity, Op. 299 No. 1 is an etude by Carl Czerny. PlayPiano puts it at Level 5, an estimate.
- etude
- joyful
Also known as Czerny - School Of Velocity - Op. 299 No. 1.
History
The May and June 1833 music register advertised Op. 299 as thirty studies for finger speed. This first study belongs to that parent collection's teaching history, not to a documented personal episode.

What to listen for
Downward runs start higher
Each descending run begins higher than the last. Hear that larger ascent across the downward shapes.
The running direction reverses
The next runs rise from progressively higher starts. Compare their direction with the opening descents.
A lower restart renews the climb
The pattern restarts lower and extends upward. Follow the longer climb rather than accenting each restart alike.
A high drive reaches a broad chord
The high-register continuation drives into the closing chord. Hear the change from running motion to arrival.
How to practise it
Keep the descending scales even above long chords.
- Count the opening rest, then practise the descent in small overlapping groups.
- Hold each lower chord through its full measure while playing the upper line softly.
- Connect the examined opening at a comfortable tempo only when its separate layers feel settled.
How hard is it
No. 1 is provisionally an intermediate velocity-study destination. The performance target is reliable continuity at a controlled study tempo, not maximum speed.
