Piano Sonata in E minor, Op. 7: II. Andante molto is a sonata by Edvard Grieg from the Romantic era. PlayPiano puts it at Level 7, an estimate.
- sonata
- Romantic
- dreamy
Also known as Grieg - Sonata in E minor Movement 2.
History
Grieg wrote his only piano sonata in 1865. Its second movement, Andante molto, gives the pianist a lyrical pause between the energetic opening and the dance-like third movement; this upload is that middle movement, not the whole four-movement sonata.

What to listen for
A folk-like song
Listen to the melody as a gentle, folk-like song, following its longer shape rather than treating each note as a separate gesture.
How to practise it
Shape the dotted melody above a regular lower framework.
- Count the short subdivisions of each dotted pair before joining the melody.
- Practise the lower layers together before adding the melody.
- Connect the examined phrase at a comfortable tempo while keeping its stated layers and releases distinct.
How hard is it
A sustained sonata movement requires mature voicing, broad phrase architecture and controlled changes of texture and expressive weight.
