Also known as Haydn: Sonata in G Major HOB.XVI:8.
History
Haydn's short G-major Sonata, Hob. XVI:8, belongs to a group of early keyboard sonatas that may have been written for teaching, probably before he joined the Esterházy court in 1761. The modern label 'Little early Sonatas' is an editor's grouping, not Haydn's own title. This edition presents four tempo-marked sections within the sonata.

What to listen for
Light figures shape the first Allegro
Upper short-note cells move above separated lower support. Hear their connected phrase through the first movement’s repeat close.
The Minuet changes to shorter singing phrases
The separately numbered dance places melody over quarter support. Compare its sound with the preceding moving figures.
The Andante continues its ornamented replies
Shorter decoration sits above lower eighths in the slower movement. Hear the melody’s longer contour through that detail.
The final Allegro completes its moving exchange
The last movement continues its upper line toward the second repeat. Hear its ending without merging restarted labels across movements.
How to practise it
Connect the short opening gesture to the phrase and keep its rests clear.
- Keep dotted and short values distinct.
- Hear the lower entry after the lead-in.
- Preserve the upper release.
How hard is it
Transparent early-Classical textures require balanced voices and consistent articulation across contrasting material.
