What to listen for

  1. The opening tune is doubled across registers and includes small chromatic steps. In the next window, the upper melody starts weaving through the lower track's regular bass-and-chord spacing. The tune should remain connected even where the note starts do not line up with the accompaniment.

How to practise it

  1. Practise the upper note beginning at quarter position 8.75 and lasting half a quarter against the lower bass at 9. Keep the upper note across that pulse rather than reattacking it.
  2. In the second window, keep lower octave pitches 34/46 and the following 53/58/62 chord equally spaced. Add the upper chromatic movement while keeping that accompaniment soft and predictable.
