Also known as Canon and Gigue in D major, P.37; Canon in D by Pachelbel; Pachelbel arr. Mark Buccheri.

History

This piano presentation introduces the familiar tune slowly, with a single upper tone against a sustained bass. Later, the upper line gains harmony while the foundation remains steady. Give each change enough room to be heard, and aim for a smooth singing line instead of rushing toward the next chord.

How to practise it

  1. Keep the upper held melody audible above the sustained bass.
  2. Place the upper dyads together, then release into the following single tone without disturbing the bass.

How hard is it

Level 3, estimated

This particular presentation starts with sustained upper and lower whole notes, then adds upper dyads over a held bass at 17 to 20. Maintaining tone balance and clean chord changes is more central than speed; this estimate applies to this version, not every Canon arrangement.
