History

The French national library connects Rameau's keyboard piece with his encounter with two Indigenous performers at the Comédie-Italienne in 1725, placing its writing a few months after that event without assigning an exact date. The music later entered Les Indes galantes: the opera premiered in 1735, and its American entrée was added in 1736. Its historical title reflects eighteenth-century European colonial attitudes, not a description the library endorses of Indigenous peoples.

What to listen for

  1. A held note, then a quick figure

The upper B-flat is held before shorter D, G, B-flat and C notes follow. The bass moves more broadly around G. Listen for the contrast between held and quick motion.

  2. The quick motion moves below

The upper line moves in broader notes while a lower figure rises through F-sharp, A, C and E-flat. Follow the active strand as it shifts register.

  3. The upper figure returns

A held upper C leads into shorter D, A, C and D notes, above a moving lower line. Hear how the opening shape returns with different pitches.

  4. Another lower answer

The upper line outlines B-flat, D, G and B-flat while a quicker lower figure rises. Keep the two rhythms distinct without making the lower line disappear.

How to practise it

Keep related melodic gestures clear while the lower part changes its motion.

  1. Hear the upper long note as part of a phrase.
  2. Keep the lower moving figure supportive.
  3. Notice related but different melodic groups.

How hard is it

Level 6, estimated

The inspected bars combine longer gestures, moving lower pitches, cross-staff voice placement and independent releases. The intermediate target values clear line relationships throughout the component.
