History

Ravel wrote this prelude in 1913 for a commission from the Paris Conservatoire. He dedicated it to Jeanne Leleu. IRCAM also records Leleu as its first performer in June of that year, connecting the piece's commission, dedication and first performance without needing to invent a programme for its music.

What to listen for

  1. A compact idea changes colour

Follow the six-note idea through its modal colouring, as described by Nichols.

How to practise it

Connect the upper phrase and tie while the lower figure enters and recedes.

  1. Include the opening upper rest in the phrase.
  2. Keep the tied D continuous.
  3. Let the lower entry support rather than obscure the melody.

How hard is it

Level 5, estimated

A brief restrained texture requires independent phrase shaping, careful harmonic voicing and controlled releases despite its modest length.
