History

Tyrolienne turque opens Satie's Croquis et agaceries d'un gros bonhomme en bois with a deliberately odd pairing of a Tyrolean dance and a Turkish title. Its score begins 'carefully and slowly' and adds whimsical directions such as 'in the throat,' inviting a playful approach to articulation.

What to listen for

  1. Low octaves open before the other track

The initial active track alternates deep octave-separated attacks with higher single notes and chord groups. Hear the register contrast before the other track arrives.

  2. A rising figure joins the accompaniment

The later track begins a G, B, D rise, then a G, C, E shape, while the earlier line continues. Let the rising figures be heard without covering the accompaniment.

How to practise it

  1. Practise the opening low octave-separated attacks alone, then connect each to its following higher note or chord group. Repeat the whole pattern while keeping each register change inside the existing timing.
  2. Play the G, B, D rise and the G, C, E shape alone. Add the earlier continuing line with a lighter touch so each rising figure remains distinct at its entry.

How hard is it

Level 5, estimated

Stylized dance gestures require rhythmic buoyancy, secure hand coordination and crisp contrasts at a comfortable intended tempo.
