History

A corrected early printing of Kuriose Geschichte wrote out the repeats, according to Herttrich's critical comments. The miniature's transmission therefore includes a change in how recurring music appeared on the page, not evidence of a newly discovered story behind its title.

What to listen for

  1. Short responses lead to a longer answer

A pickup introduces chordal, grace-note and rest-bearing replies before the opening group rises into a longer gesture. Hear the short sounds lead toward that answer.

  2. The opening group is written again

The opening group recurs in the written source. Compare its gestures and rising response rather than assuming an additional repeat command.

  3. A descending contrast leaves space

The contrast descends through moving notes and longer rests. Listen to its direction and let the spaces remain audible.

  4. A related return slows at the end

The contrast and transformed opening return recur in writing with a changed terminal response. Hear the familiar shape move into its slower final close.

How to practise it

Keep the playful interruptions precise without breaking the broader line.

  1. Practise the quarter into the grace approach and short rest slowly.
  2. Practise the first lower reply alone, then combine the two source streams.

How hard is it

Level 5, estimated

Conversational gestures and differing note lengths need clear articulation and balance between interlocking parts.
