What to listen for
Dotted chords lead to strong replies
Hear the opening chordal gesture move from a dotted figure into accented quarter-note replies. Follow the upper contour within the full sound.
Longer chords broaden the middle
The middle replaces the opening’s dotted gesture with longer chordal holds and repeated accented chords. Listen for the change in the length of each response.
How to practise it
Keep the forceful chord rhythm measured against moving octave support.
- Practise the opening dotted progression at a moderate speed with prepared shapes.
- Practise the two opening octave approaches softly before combining with upper chords.
How hard is it
Weighty chordal gestures and contrasting dynamics need controlled attacks and clear phrase direction.
