What to listen for
A quiet pickup joins related phrases
A pickup begins two related quiet phrases that are written out. Hear their connection without inventing an opening repeat between them.
A contrasting continuation
The next continuation changes the opening phrase. Listen for the new direction while remembering the quieter shape that began the piece.
The opening contour returns lower
An opening-related contour returns with a lower-register start and develops toward different endings. Hear the familiar shape in its changed placement.
Closing echoes descend through registers
After the final ending, related echoes move downward through lower registers toward the last chord. Follow that descent without adding another repeat.
How to practise it
Connect the melodic colour changes without losing the supporting voices.
- Lead the pickup into the phrase.
- Read E-natural and E-flat as distinct melodic notes.
- Preserve supporting notes when the melody moves.
How hard is it
The opening layers melody, inner chord notes and independently moving bass. Balance and sustained line through changing textures matter more than raw note speed.
