What to listen for

  1. A short call opens the dialogue

The first repeated group alternates a small call with held and rising detached responses. Listen for the contrast between the call and its longer answer.

  2. A higher call changes the colour

The second repeated group begins higher, then moves into paired-note calls. Hear the register change and the thicker replies as related parts of the same dialogue.

  3. Detached high responses expand the idea

High detached figures and small grace-note replies make the call more expansive. Keep their releases clear without turning the ornaments into full extra beats.

  4. Related chords close with a changed answer

The final chordal groups remain inside the second repeat and end differently. Compare their replies, then hear the rests around the final response.

How to practise it

Keep the hunting-song pulse buoyant through accents and ties.

  1. Count two groups per bar while playing the opening quarter-eighth gestures.
  2. Practise the first paired streams slowly and listen for aligned ends.

How hard is it

Level 3, estimated

Hunting-song articulation needs buoyant pulse, clear repeated gestures and coordinated accompaniment.
