What to listen for

  1. A gently moving opening

The melody combines short sixteenth-note turns with slurred eighth-note pairs. Let the small turns flow into the longer gesture rather than giving every note equal weight.

  2. Two touches in one phrase

Two detached dyads lead into connected quarter-note chords. Hear the change from a light touch to a more sustained gesture.

  3. Keep the line connected

A brief sixteenth-note turn leads into paired notes and a held chord; the next bar continues with a tied note. Keep the melody connected through these changes of rhythm.

  4. Recognize the returning gesture

The opening motion returns, followed again by detached dyads and connected chords. Preserve its familiar shape even as the phrase continues.

  5. A repeated phrase fragment

The same small figure is heard twice: a quick turn, a connected rise and a longer settling note. Keep the repetitions related without making them mechanical.

How to practise it

Keep the upper decoration distinct from the lower independent lines.

  1. Practise the upper line slowly with the neighbour pair light.
  2. Practise the two lower strands before adding the upper melody.
  3. Connect the stated opening gestures at a comfortable tempo, keeping their distinct releases.

How hard is it

Level 6, estimated

The proposed intermediate target prioritizes a sustained melodic phrase, supportive accompaniment and differentiated character across the complete January component. Recognition of its opening is a smaller target.
