Life and music

Domenico Scarlatti was born in Naples in 1685, the son of composer Alessandro Scarlatti, and died in Madrid in 1757. Although he also wrote opera and sacred music, his large keyboard output became central to his reputation. His career included Venice and Rome, followed by service to João V and music for Maria Barbara. Surviving copies transmit variants, so a modern edition is not automatically a unique original text.

Explore the Aria, K. 32, then investigate the layered voices of K. 87 and the contrasting character of K. 27. These are listening destinations, not a compulsory course. Where notes cross between staves, their printed position does not by itself tell you which hand to use.
