Life and music

Enrique Granados combined composing, piano performance and teaching. He studied in Paris before returning to Barcelona and founding his academy. His interests included Spanish dance and the Romantic piano tradition. Goyescas became a piano suite before its adaptation as an opera; those are separate works and events.

Compare two movements from Valses poéticos: No. 5, Allegretto (elegante), and No. 7, Vivo. Their character markings invite different kinds of movement and expression. These two pieces introduce the collection without standing for the whole cycle.
