Life and music

Friedrich Kuhlau was a German-born composer who settled in Denmark in 1810 during the Napoleonic wars. His court duties included writing stage music, but he also earned his living as a pianist and music teacher. Alongside piano music, he wrote chamber works often involving flute. Mozart and Beethoven were important models; in September 1825 he visited Beethoven in Vienna. His music for Elverhøi followed in 1828.

Compare the Andante, Allegro and Rondo of the Sonatina Op. 20 No. 1. Each movement offers a different listening emphasis. You can explore them individually while remembering their place in the same three-movement sonatina.
