Life and music
Frescobaldi grew up in Ferrara and studied with Luzzasco Luzzaschi. He became organist at St Peter's in Rome in 1608, a position interrupted by a period at the Tuscan court. His career placed keyboard music at the heart of both church and court life.
His publications explored toccatas, variations and contrapuntal forms for organ and harpsichord. Fiori musicali appeared in 1635. Froberger studied with him in Rome, helping carry this keyboard tradition beyond Italy.
