Life and music
Isaac Albéniz was a pianist as well as a composer. He studied composition with Felip Pedrell after returning to Barcelona in 1883, then worked between Barcelona, London and Paris. His career included opera as well as the piano music for which he became especially known. During 1898 to 1900 he taught at Paris's Schola Cantorum, where his musical circle included Paul Dukas and Gabriel Fauré.
Rumores de la caleta, Op. 71 No. 6, offers one encounter with his keyboard writing. Listen for how melody and rhythmic energy share the foreground. The opus and item number help distinguish this piece from other Spanish-themed collections.
