The short answer
The original course was shorter. School of Velocity, Op. 299: No. 2 is an etude by Carl Czerny from the Romantic era. PlayPiano puts it at Level 5, an estimate.
- etude
- Romantic
- joyful
Also known as Czerny - The School of Velocity (Op. 299) - no. 2.
History
Op. 299 was advertised with thirty studies in 1833, rather than today's familiar forty. No. 2 sits within that earlier numbered range; this establishes collection history, not the lineage of our file.

What to listen for
Rising lower runs support upper replies
Follow the lower ascent beneath the related upper responses as their pitch groups move higher.
Continuous lower motion meets slower gestures
The running foundation continues under broader upper sound. Listen to both lengths within the phrase.
Lower descents carry higher responses
Descending lower runs support high upper answers. Hear their opposing register directions.
Chordal gestures bring the motion to rest
The short closing span changes from running figures to chords. Hear the arrival after the continuous lower movement.
How to practise it
Coordinate the ascending lower run with slower upper events.
- Count the rest, then practise each lower ascent in short overlapping sections.
- Practise the upper rhythm alone, then identify where its sixteenths join the lower activity.
- Connect the examined opening at a comfortable tempo only when its separate layers feel settled.
How hard is it
No. 2 is provisionally grouped with the early acquired Op. 299 studies. Building evenness while preserving phrase shape is the target, not its collection number alone.
