The short answer
A school gave the left hand special attention. School for the Left Hand, Op. 399 No. 1 is an etude by Carl Czerny. PlayPiano puts it at Level 7, an estimate.
- etude
- playful
Also known as Die Schule der linken Hand Op. 399 No. 1.
History
The April and May 1836 publication notice describes Op. 399 as ten large exercises paying particular attention to the left hand, issued in two books by Diabelli. This is parent pedagogical history for No. 1, not evidence that the right hand must remain silent.

What to listen for
Lower motion supports chordal upper replies
Hear the moving lower figures beneath the broader responses. The collection title does not dictate every physical hand assignment.
A changed colour brings descending answers
The three-flat contrast develops downward responses. Follow their direction through the new pitch context.
Repeated upper groups become denser
Related figures thicken into repeated upper groups. Listen for their longer phrase rather than uniform accenting.
Chromatic figures move toward higher closing gestures
The ending changes pitch colours and rises in register. Hear its direction without relocating the source notes.
How to practise it
Keep the lower running figures even under slower upper chords.
- Practise one lower four-note group, then connect adjacent groups.
- Practise the upper chord attacks and releases alone, then retain them over the lower run.
- Connect the examined phrase at a comfortable tempo while keeping its stated layers and releases distinct.
How hard is it
A left-hand-focused study requires dependable weaker-hand control, differentiated balance and sustained coordination rather than inferring difficulty solely from note quantity.
