Also known as 160 Eight-Measure Exercises, No. 1.

History

Czerny's Op. 821 is a collection of 160 eight-measure exercises. This first numbered exercise opens that sequence. Its small scale makes it a focused practice miniature, rather than a concert-length work: a short unit within a much larger teaching collection.

What to listen for

  1. Small patterns travel through the register

The upper part runs continuously in sixteenth notes, using short up-and-down shapes before moving to a new position. The lower part answers with quarter-note intervals and rests. Listen for even motion above a lighter, spaced accompaniment.

  2. Chromatic neighbours change the route

Forte introduces a new upper figure containing C-sharp and G-sharp among the rising groups. The lower part sounds one chord and then rests. Hear the altered notes clearly rather than treating this as an unchanged C-major pattern.

How to practise it

Keep the short-note figures even above clear chord entries and rests.

  1. Learn changed note routes before speed.
  2. Keep lower rests clear.
  3. Do not use the source MIDI tempo as a compulsory speed.

How hard is it

Level 3, estimated

The proposed target values reliable coordination and a clear phrase over the acquired exercise. Eight measures describe its length, not proof of beginner difficulty.
