History
Czerny's Op. 821 was first published in 1852 as a set of 160 short keyboard exercises. Its original subtitle presents the eight-measure studies as a way to learn common figures and passages quickly and improve reading at sight. The selected Mutopia files derive from a later 1888 Peters print, not from the first edition.

What to listen for
A zigzag gets an answer
The upper line begins B flat, D, C and E flat, rather than a straight scale. The lower pairs enter later in the opening window. Listen for a winding lead followed by a more measured reply.
How to practise it
- Learn the upper zigzag as small directional groups, then add the lower paired entries without resetting the upper flow.
How hard is it
The upper short-note stream alternates small leaps rather than simply stepping, across a wide total register, while lower paired support enters later. Reading the changing contours and coordinating the delayed layer supports an intermediate estimate.
