History
Czerny's Op. 821 was first published in 1852 as a set of 160 short keyboard exercises. Its original subtitle presents the eight-measure studies as a way to learn common figures and passages quickly and improve reading at sight. The selected Mutopia files derive from a later 1888 Peters print, not from the first edition.

What to listen for
A repeated group makes room for a jump
The opening repeats D four times, then moves up to B. A new repeated group begins on C while the lower bass holds. Hear the repeated pattern as a launch for the next melodic arrival.
How to practise it
- Shape the four repeated upper events as one gesture, then place the next wider arrival without shortening the lower hold.
How hard is it
Four-note repeated upper groups are interrupted by wider melodic arrivals, over sustained bass and paired lower support. Grouping the repetitions and coordinating the different lengths supports an intermediate estimate.
