History
Czerny's Op. 821 was first published in 1852 as a set of 160 short keyboard exercises. Its original subtitle presents the eight-measure studies as a way to learn common figures and passages quickly and improve reading at sight. The selected Mutopia files derive from a later 1888 Peters print, not from the first edition.

What to listen for
Motion underneath a held sound
The upper part starts with held E and G while the lower part climbs C, D, E, F, G, A and B. Hear the climb as one gesture beneath the sustained sound rather than seven separate accents.
How to practise it
- Practise the lower stepwise line alone, then add the upper holds without interrupting its short-note spacing.
How hard is it
Held upper pairs and chords must remain balanced while a separate lower line moves in quick scalar steps. The simultaneous sustained and moving textures make this more than a simple melody exercise.
