History
Czerny's Op. 821 was first published in 1852 as a set of 160 short keyboard exercises. Its original subtitle presents the eight-measure studies as a way to learn common figures and passages quickly and improve reading at sight. The selected Mutopia files derive from a later 1888 Peters print, not from the first edition.

What to listen for
A line climbs by half steps
The upper line begins C, C sharp, D, D sharp, E, F and F sharp. Its small steps contrast with longer lower events. Listen for a smooth winding line instead of a series of isolated changes.
How to practise it
- Play the upper half-step sequence slowly enough to keep every interval clear, then connect it without stressing each chromatic pitch.
How hard is it
A long upper chromatic sequence moves in equal short events above held bass and regularly changing lower support. Reading the half-step motion and preserving its continuity support an intermediate estimate.
