History
Czerny's Op. 840 appeared in Mainz in 1855. It contains fifty progressively arranged melodic piano exercises across major and minor keys, organized in five books. The first two selected pieces come from the opening book, a different kind of study from his very short Op. 821 drills.

What to listen for
A melody has a small flourish
The upper C leads through two very brief higher events into F, then makes a similar gesture toward G. The lower bass and its moving notes are slower. Listen to the longer melodic arrival, not just the small flourish.
How to practise it
- Practise the longer upper arrivals first, then fit the very brief linking events into the melody without disturbing the lower pattern.
How hard is it
The upper melody includes very brief linking events and changing short-note motion over a lower line with held bass and separate accompaniment notes. Longer melodic continuity and coordination support an intermediate estimate.
