What to listen for
Strong gestures recur within the opening
The chordal opening includes related gestures returning within its first span. Hear their common shape without making every attack equally heavy.
A quieter contour moves higher
The high-register contour brings a quieter contrast. Listen for its longer direction after the stronger opening gestures.
The continuation begins to grow
The continuation gathers movement before the opening-like figures return. Hear this growth as preparation for the broader response.
Increasing motion makes a strong ending
The final span becomes more active before a strong close. Follow that larger direction through the individual figures.
How to practise it
Let the held opening sonority lead into the running upper line.
- Practise the lower opening into the held chord, then add the upper held notes softly.
- Practise the upper line with the lower quarter releases and their following silence.
- Connect the examined phrase at a comfortable tempo while keeping its stated layers and releases distinct.
How hard is it
Contrasting chordal gestures and flowing passages require coordinated movement and careful resonance control.
