The short answer
The Menuet kept its name. Menuet, Suite bergamasque, L. 75 is a minuet by Claude Debussy from the Late Romantic and Impressionist era. PlayPiano puts it at Level 8, an estimate.
- minuet
- Late Romantic and Impressionist
- playful
Also known as Debussy - Suite Bergamasque - II. Menuet.
History
Menuet was one of the Suite bergamasque's two movements whose original titles survived publication. The third became Clair de lune and the fourth Passepied. Its naming history is stable even though the suite reached print much later.

What to listen for
Compact gestures open quietly
The movement begins with quiet compact gestures. Hear the short shapes as related parts of a phrase, not isolated attacks.
Rising figures bring a quiet change
Quiet rising figures prepare stronger descending replies. Follow their upward direction within the changing texture.
Changing pitch colours gather movement
Signature changes accompany the growing continuation. Hear the evolving pitch groups without inventing a minuet-and-trio route from the title.
A recall leads through a glissando to space
The quiet recall includes a written glissando before a sparse close. Hear the change from moving gesture to the final separated sound.
How to practise it
Keep the moving inner line audible beneath detached chord punctuation.
- Practise upper attacks and rests at a light volume.
- Practise voice 2 alone, then add only the quiet upper punctuation.
- Connect the examined phrase at a comfortable tempo while keeping its stated layers and releases distinct.
How hard is it
Ornamental gestures, changing articulation and dance-like phrasing demand precise coordination and color control.
