History

Mozart entered the C-minor sonata in his work catalogue on 14 October 1784. It is associated with Vienna and dedicated to Maria Theresia von Trattner. Artaria published the parent sonata in December 1785. This movement shares that work history; the catalogue entry is not proof that every movement was composed on that one day.

What to listen for

  1. An upbeat held across the boundary

The accented pickup continues into the first full bar without another attack. Hear the descending line as one gesture, with the lower harmony entering underneath it.

  2. The phrase reaches and falls

Tied notes connect the melody across boundaries as it reaches upward and descends again. Keep those sustained sounds connected and distinguish them from the few detached notes.

  3. The line grows in intensity

A written crescendo accompanies a broader rise and descent. Shape the melody above the changing inner voices without turning every beat into an accent.

  4. Tension settles into an answer

The line moves through F-sharp, then resolves to G while the written swell eases. Keep the tied note sounding into the next bar before making the new attack.

How to practise it

Sustain the upper ties over slowly changing paired support.

  1. Practise the upper ties without replaying continuation notes.
  2. Practise the long lower pairs before adding the upper line.
  3. Connect the stated opening gestures at a comfortable tempo, keeping their distinct releases.

How hard is it

Level 8, estimated

The advanced proposal values sustained coordination and a coherent performance arc through the full finale, with contrasts remaining clear beyond individual active gestures.
