L'Indifférente, Suite in G, RCT 6 is a character piece by Jean-Philippe Rameau from the Baroque era. PlayPiano puts it at Level 5, an estimate.
- character piece
- Baroque
- gentle
Also known as J.P. Rameau Suite en Sol L'Indifférente; L'Indifférente from Suite in G, RCT 6.
History
L’Indifférente follows Les tricotets in Rameau’s RCT 6 keyboard suite. It is a separate character piece within Nouvelles suites de pièces de clavecin, whose publication is dated differently across catalogues of the late 1720s. This playable score is the individual movement, not the whole suite.

What to listen for
Decoration leads into a descending answer
The opening contours descend toward a closing response. Hear the ornaments within their longer line.
The opening returns with changed placement
Opening material is recalled across a changed staff distribution. Follow the musical contour, not a fixed hand label.
Sequences descend through changing colours
The later sequences fall while pitch groups change. Hear their related shape through the new colour.
A rising response expands the final close
Related rising gestures extend the ending. Compare their direction with the preceding descending sequences.
How to practise it
Keep the two upper voices distinct even when the lower staff rests.
- Hear both upper contours.
- Keep their unequal note rates clear.
- Do not infer hands from staff position.
How hard is it
Elegant compact phrases require refined articulation, balanced voices and deliberate ornament shaping rather than relying on expressive pedal.
