What to listen for
An opening flourish leads downward
The short opening flourish reaches a longer note, then dotted responses descend. Follow the downward direction rather than hearing each decoration as a separate phrase.
Rests interrupt the flowing answer
After the descending dotted figures, a short low response and separated chord leave space before another ornamented reply. Hear the contrast between motion and interruption.
How to practise it
Let the decorated opening fall through its dotted descent over long bass notes.
- Practise the main dotted line without grace notes, then insert the grace group without shortening the C destination.
- Count through each long lower note while singing the upper descent; avoid reattacking the bass between melodic pairs.
How hard is it
Extended contrasting sections need structural pacing, coordinated textures and sustained melodic balance.
